TASTING NOTES: The West Block is deep and inviting, displaying a satisfying mouthful of black cherry fruit flavors with deeper boysenberry and fleshy, ripe blue plum notes. Medium body, with with sweet cherry flavors and a good mixture of wildberries, delicate rose petal, bakers spices, and cola accents. Builds richness and complexity on the polished, savory finish. WHY IS WEST BLOCKS-SEDIMENTARY SOIL SO IMPORTANT
Alexana’s western blocks range in elevation from 350 to 500 feet and are composed of heavy marine-sedimentary soils that are deep, well drained and with little to no water retention. Vineyards here are also exposed to stiff coastal Pacific breezes and large diurnal temperature shifts, causing the vines to produce smaller berries with thicker skins. This leads to wines with outstanding concentration and structure and excellent depth of flavor!!Â
