Abundant aromas of crisp white peach, Gala apple, wine poached pears and orange oil with nuances of nutmeg, wood spice and buttered pastry crusts . Full-ish in body, this is supple and satiny, lively and precise, with a dusty mineral laden finish. Brilliant!
Champ Gain translates roughly as "regained field". This refers to the now-valuable vineyard site once being scrubland and forest. Champ Gain has a broken clay limestone soil with a lot of pebbles and rocks in the topsoil. As the soil is porous and on a slope, water drains freely from the vineyard, making the soil rather dry. Vines are forced to find water deeper in the soil, where there is an abundance of minerals. This can add complexity to the finished wines in the form of flinty, stony characters.
